ISMUN: INTERNATIONAL YOUTH AND STUDENT MOVEMENT FOR THE UNITED NATIONS

12th Session of the Council of Human Rights (September 14 to October 2 200 922 September 2009

Point 4 of the agenda: Status relating to human rights that require the attention of the Council

Speaker: Sheikh Mohamed M'Hamed

Mr. President,

Movement International Youth and Students for the United Nations, considers that massive denial of human rights and basic democratic freedoms, resulting from the occupation and conflict with often tragic consequences for the people, need special attention and commitment of the Council of Human Rights. And among the situations that deserve the attention of the Council is that of Western Sahara, illegally occupied by Morocco, or the situation of human rights, far from improving, has instead worsened last time. The examples of serious and recurrent violations of human rights are legion and dozens of Saharawi just pay the price for the sole reason of having participated, 15 and 16 September in El Aaiun, Smara and Boujdour, peaceful demonstrations demanding the right to self-determination and respect for Human Rights in the Sahara Occidental.La violence intervention Moroccan forces of repression has resulted in tens of wounded, several arrests, punitive expeditions and ransacking homes and property particuliers.En because of his positions in favor of the independence of Western Sahara, the Sahrawi human rights Naama Asfari just been sentenced to four months in prison after and questionable trial are concerned. The 11 Sahrawi human rights, who came to attend his trial had been arrested, brutally tortured and abandoned outside the city of Tan Tan.Parmi violations of human rights recognized in the territories of Western Sahara, and remain marked with the seal of impunity, there is the systematic use of torture and intimidation of victims, forced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, harassment of victims or their surroundings ... Many Sahrawi human rights have paid a heavy price for their political beliefs and commitments, such Yahya Mohamed El Hafez who was sentenced Oct. 9, 2008, to a term of imprisonment of 15 years for helping demonstrations calling for self-determination and independence of the Saharawi people and the Saharawi journalist Mustafa Abdel Dayem, and many others who are still languishing in prisons marocaines.
