Violation of human rights in Western Sahara


France Libertés Fondation Danielle Mitterrand held September 22 on the sidelines of the 12th Session Council of Human Rights in Geneva that continues, a parallel event entitled "Violation of human rights in Western Sahara ».---------------------------------------

This side event, sponsored by the Movement against Racism and for Friendship among Peoples (MRAP), the Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), the International Movement of Youth and Students of the United Nations (ISMUN) Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and the organization International Education Development (IED), saw the participation of stakeholders as follows:


-M. Christian Viret (Moderator) President of the International for the Respect of Human Rights in Western Sahara, BIRDHSO

- Ms. Oreta Bandettini, Representative of France-Libertés

-M. Patrick Herzig, Lawyer of the Swiss League of Human Rights,

-M. Abba Salek El Jassan , Secretary General of the Union of Saharawi Jurists,

- Ms. Karen Parker , lawyer specializing in international humanitarian law and delegated by Chief of the International Education Development (IED).

Throughout the debate, which lasted two hours, speakers drawn an alarming extent of violations of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, which reached in recent days, an alarming level due to the violent repression of peaceful demonstrations that took place at different locations Saharawi territory, including in El Aaiun, Smara and Boujdour.


The speakers informed the audience that the latest information from the Western Sahara reported a riot situation and fierce repression of the Moroccan occupation forces following the recent peaceful demonstrations calling for the self determination the Saharawi people and respect for human rights, have made punitive expeditions, ransacked homes, tortured, imprisoned and sentenced dozens of Saharawi after trial, not only do not meet any international standard, but add even more to arbitrary detention which characterizes suffered by Sahrawi citizens.


Lawyer of the Swiss League of Human Rights, Mr. Patrick Hertzig, who has covered many trials in Western Sahara, said he was particularly shocked by the fact that the Sahrawi human rights of man are constantly in the crosshairs of power, constantly harassed, falsely accused and may even face the death penalty.


Speakers stressed that the international community to shed light on the disappearance of 560 civilians, 151 Saharawi prisoners of war, 15 young Sahrawi, missing since December 25, 2005, and that political prisoners , defenders of human rights and the Sahrawi students imprisoned arbitrarily, in different detention centers in Morocco are released unconditionally.


They finally stressed the need for a real commitment of the Council of Human Rights, United Nations but also the entire international community so that we expand the powers of MINURSO for the protection of Saharawi civilians in the territories under Moroccan occupation.
